My 5th graders used their chrome books to do research on the different nutritional labels for the food choices at McDonald's via their website. They also had to incorporate their math skills in order to calculate their caloric intake for the day based upon the foods they chose.
They were all given a daily meal plan sheet with breakfast, lunch and dinner categories. They had to log onto the McDonald's website to start searching through all the food options for each meal. Students were given a total intake of 1,500 calories. The students were also urged to not just choose lower calorie options, but to make sure they were all around healthy choices. Our 5th graders seemed very surprised that fast food restaurants such as McDonald's had healthy options available and each student was able to successfully complete the challenge!
